Sleep Management

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when a person stops breathing repeatedly during sleep. Sleep patterns are disrupted, resulting in excessive sleepiness or fatigue during the day. OSA is quite common, yet most sufferers remain undiagnosed and untreated. Once OSA is identified, treatment is simple and effective.

The symptoms of OSA without CPAP or BiLevel

  • Sleep is interrupted when breathing stops
  • Loud snoring
  • Low blood oxygen levels
  • Poor sleep
  • Fatigued the next day
  • Increased risk for heart disease, stroke and accidents due to sleep deprivation

Patients on CPAP or BiLevel

  • Normal breathing returns
  • Snoring stops
  • Normal blood oxygen levels return
  • Restful sleep is regained
  • Patients have improved quality of life
  • Risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension are reduced

"Your Respiratory Therapist was so caring and kind. Her sincerity and patience have made me feel completely comfortable with my new sleep therapy."

-- Local CPAP Patient

Gray Arrow

A 56-year-old male whose height was 5’10” and weight was 280 pounds presented to his primary care physician with a history of driving problems. The patient worked as a truck driver for a local school system. One day, a woman followed his truck to school and reported that he was inebriated to the police. The police tested him for alcohol and found him to be sober. He was then referred to his primary care physician who ordered a sleep study and diagnosed him with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

When the patient drove up to the AdvantaCare office in Monterey, the retail staff noticed that he swerved through the company’s parking lot and then parked on top of the sidewalk. The staff commented to the respiratory therapy manager that the patient drove like he was drunk. The respiratory therapy manager replied that he was an OSA patient. He was evaluated for an appropriate CPAP system as 10cm H20 was ordered by his physician.

The patient was a claustrophobic, which is common in sleep apnea patients. The respiratory therapy manager fitted him with nasal pillows and small headgear so the device was less intrusive and the patient would be compliant with his treatment. The CPAP was fitted with a heated humidifier attached inline to prevent airway and nose dryness. The patient remains compliant with this therapy.
